A proposed expansion of the Islamic Center of Clermont is quickly becoming one of the most closely watched development issues in South Lake County, drawing both support and opposition from residents ahead of a scheduled Lake County Commission vote.

The Islamic Center of Clermont is seeking approval to expand its existing property near Johns Lake Road and Hancock Road. According to county documents and reporting from WFTV, the proposal involves rezoning approximately 3.69 acres of adjacent land from Agriculture to Community Facility District, allowing the property to be incorporated into the center's existing campus.

The expansion would allow for the construction of two additional Islamic worship halls, the repurposing of existing structures and the addition of a cul-de-sac. The Islamic Center has said its current location has been outgrown and that additional space is needed to accommodate its religious use.

However, the proposal has generated significant discussion among nearby residents.

A petition opposing the rezoning has circulated online, with residents raising concerns about increased traffic, noise, infrastructure, pedestrian safety and the potential impact on the surrounding neighborhood. Hancock Road and Johns Lake Road have become particular points of concern, with some residents arguing that the area's existing road network is already struggling to keep up with South Lake County's rapid growth.

Residents interviewed by WFTV emphasized that their concerns were focused on the potential impact of the development rather than the religious practices taking place at the center. Among the issues mentioned were traffic congestion, property values, lighting and noise associated with a larger facility.

At the same time, the proposal has also generated a strong response from community members who support the expansion. A separate petition supporting the Islamic Center argues that the organization should be allowed to grow and that residents of all faiths deserve the opportunity to have an appropriate place of worship in their community.

The debate highlights a larger issue facing Clermont and South Lake County: how should the region manage continued growth while addressing legitimate concerns about traffic and infrastructure?

According to a Lake County transportation assessment referenced by WFTV, the proposed expansion is expected to generate only three additional afternoon peak-hour trips while maintaining an acceptable level of service. Future development plans would also require additional review, including a noise assessment and a minimum 50-foot landscape buffer intended to help address impacts on neighboring properties.

The Lake County Planning and Zoning Board advanced the rezoning request earlier this month, sending the issue to the Lake County Board of County Commissioners for consideration. The commission is scheduled to hear the request on September 1.

Whatever the outcome, the discussion surrounding the Islamic Center of Clermont has become about more than a single development proposal. It has brought together questions about religious freedom, responsible growth, traffic, infrastructure and what Clermont's rapidly changing community will look like in the years ahead.

For residents on both sides of the issue, the upcoming county commission meeting will be an important next step in determining the future of the proposed campus.

The Clermont Current will continue following the proposal and provide updates following the Lake County Commission's September 1 vote.
