Groveland Police Chief and Public Safety Director Shawn Ramsey has reportedly resigned, bringing a sudden end to his tenure leading the city’s police department and adding another major development to an already turbulent period for city government.

Ramsey had served as Groveland’s police chief since 2017 and had overseen the department through a period of significant growth for the city. In recent years, Groveland has continued to expand rapidly, bringing increased demands on public safety services and the police department.

The reported resignation comes just days after Ramsey filed a lawsuit against the City of Groveland alleging retaliation under Florida’s Public Whistle-blower’s Act. According to the lawsuit, Ramsey alleged that city officials retaliated against him after he submitted complaints concerning what he believed were violations of law, misuse of public office, abuse of governmental authority and other misconduct.

The lawsuit was filed on August 14 and remains a significant backdrop to Ramsey’s departure. The City of Groveland had not publicly commented on the litigation, citing the pending legal matter.

As of the latest information available on the City of Groveland’s website, Ramsey was still listed as the city’s Chief of Police and Public Safety Director, alongside Deputy Chief Armando Loney.

That makes the timing of his reported resignation particularly noteworthy, and raises questions about what comes next for the Groveland Police Department. It is not yet clear who will lead the department on an interim basis or when the city will begin the process of selecting a permanent replacement.

Ramsey’s departure also comes during a period of broader change within Groveland’s government. City leaders have been navigating administrative turnover, financial concerns and discussions surrounding the future of the city’s emergency dispatch operations.

For now, many questions surrounding Ramsey’s sudden resignation remain unanswered. The Clermont Current will continue to follow the story and provide updates as additional information becomes publicly available.
